Eastern Osprey

Ospreys are cosmipolitan birds, i.e. that they are found on every continent (Antacrtica excluded). They occur in a few forms in different places and the subspecies found in Australia and much of Asia is cristatus, which is the smallest (at 50-65 cm) and also non-migratory. Some authorities split this subspecies as a full species, but it has yet to gain widespread acceptance. The diet of the Osprey is predominently fish, which is catches with its specialised claws that have scales for gripping the fish. One of the claws is reversibile so that it can easily perch with three toes forward, but catch fish more effectively by turning one toe backwards.
