Southern Boobook
Ninox novaeseelandiae

The Southern Boobook is a member of the hawk-owl family, related to the Powerful Owl and is moderately common. The name comes from a rendering of the call, which also gives rise to it's common name in New Zealand of Morepork and the Maori name Ruru. They are the smallest of the Australian owls and they feed on insects and small mammals. Click on the images for larger pictures.
