Paradise Shelduck (Putangitangi)
Tadorna variegata

Another of the few birds that has prospered after the arrival of Europeans, the Paradise Shelduck has benefitted from the removal of much of New Zealand's original forest. They are a popular target for hunters and are only partially protected under New Zealand law. The males and females show different plumage, with the male havng a dark head and the female white.
