Purple Swamphen (Pukeko)

The Purple Swamphen is more commonly known in New Zealand by its Maori name, Pukeko, and is common throughout the country. They are fairly recent arrivals in New Zealand, probably predating the arrival of the Maori's ancestors. They share a common ancestor with the equally-famed Takahe, which then evolved to be flightless.
